Hair Types
Type 4a hair you have well-defined, tight S-shaped curls that look like small, spring-like coils. Your curls are typically about the size of a crochet needle, giving the hair a soft, bouncy appearance. Type 4a hair retains moisture better than the other Type 4 subcategories, which helps it remain more manageable. However, it is still prone to shrinkage, often appearing shorter than its actual length, and requires consistent hydration and care to maintain its definition and prevent breakage.
Type 4b hair you have distinct zigzag or “Z” curl pattern with sharp angles instead of a rounded, spiral shape. Unlike Type 4a, the curls are less defined, giving the hair a fluffy, voluminous appearance. Gentle detangling and regular hydration are essential for keeping Type 4b hair healthy, as its structure makes it more delicate.
Type 4c hair has the tightest coils of all the Type 4 subcategories, with little to no visible curl definition. The strands form tiny, densely packed coils that can shrink up to 80% of their actual length, making the hair appear shorter and more compact. Type 4c hair is the most fragile due to its structure, which creates multiple points of potential breakage. It requires extra care through consistent deep conditioning, moisturizing, and low-manipulation styling to maintain its strength and prevent damage. Protective styles, like braids or twists, are particularly beneficial for preserving the health and length of Type 4c hair.
